SPQ 057: Repurposing Content: Does it Violate the Rules of KDP?

Holding an open book with dust coming out.

The Question

George asks: I have a question about reusing content from a Kindle book. I have a niche site idea using affiliate marketing that is based on the same content in my book. Am I allowed to copy and paste chapters as blog posts, or is that a violation of KDP terms?

Biggest Takeaway

You can repurpose an entire book’s content only if it is not part of KDP Select.

Steve’s Answer

Steve really likes this question because it shows George is thinking beyond the Kindle platform. You really need to sit down and think of different ways to reuse your content. You can reuse content in the following ways:

  • Podcast episodes
  • Blog posts
  • Information products
  • Lead magnets
  • Kindle books

You don’t just want to write something and use it once; you should reuse your content as much as possible. However, there is a method to repurposing content effectively.

The short answer to this question is that you can reuse the entire book, but only if it is not part of KDP Select. If you are in KDP Select, your content must be exclusive to Amazon. Steve talked about the benefits of participating in KDP Select in episode 6.

If your book is in KDP select, no more than 10 percent of the content can be published elsewhere; however, there is a workaround for this. You need to do a complete rewrite of the content.

You can use similar ideas elsewhere, but you can’t use the same exact content from a book in the KDP Select program. Steve has done this several times. If he writes a book and knows he covered the same topic in his blog, he rewrites some of his blog content to make it unique. He’s also had freelancers rewrite some of his book content to use elsewhere.

Steve says George should create unique versions of his content. You can rewrite it yourself or hire a freelancer to do a light rewrite. Slowly roll out the content to see if it helps sell affiliate products. Take time to rest your results before you move on to a new technique.

Repurposing content is a great way to leverage your brand and promote your business on as many platforms as possible.
